Caught Inside Out with my uni girls last Tuesday and I have not set about blogging about it till now. Utterly the most anticipated animation film of 2015, its trailer was out since last year 2014 and I have been anxiously waiting for it to hit the theatres here. When it FINALLY came out on 27th August, I had to wait no more! haha. With film critics giving it a 4.5 stars out of 5, Inside Out certainly lived up to its expectations :)
Combined Comedy + Family + Action, it really brings the viewers right into how are emotions come into play. The director had actually sort the advice of psychologists to make it as real as possible as to how the brain of an eleven-year-old develops. Although there are tons of emotions to choose from e.g jealously, cynical etc but this movie features 5 prominent ones : joy, sadness, anger, disgust and fear. Each of them sporting their own colour and their they are actually conceived out of different shapes. Joy is a star, sadness is a teardrop, fear is a nerve, rage is a red brick and disgust is a broccoli... a vegetable that apparently all little kids hate when they were young.
The story centers around Riley, an 11-yo whose family moved from Minnesota to San Francisco when her Dad had set-up a new business there. The start actually showed the 'origin' of the emotions, joy existed first when Riley opened her eyes and smiled at her parents when she was just a baby. Sadness came after when she started crying. So on and so forth. The emotions live in Riley's brain in an area where they call the 'headquarters'. Riley's emotion-in-command seems to be joy. Other than the headquarters, there are also other islands like friendship island, goofball island, family island, hockey island etc. These are island that hold precious memories for Riley.
Over the course of the movie, it shows that Riley was not able to adjust to her new environment, and however hard joy tries to make her happy, it seemed that sadness is gaining my power. The adventure starts when one of Riley's core memories (memories that are most important to Riley) was being touched by sadness (who was trying to help). Each memory ball has a distinct colour representing the emotions that Riley felt at a particular moment and at the end of the day, they will all be sent to the long term memory shelf...which are shaped exactly like the folds in out brain (kudos for the design team!). But when sadness touched a core memory, its golden shade turned into blue (joy--> sadness) and joy does not have the ability to turn it back. The plot thickens when both joy and sadness got stuck in the tube that sends the balls to the long term library and that is where the mayhem began.
Leaving fear, disgust and anger to govern the headquarters, Riley is unable to become happy again. Of course I mean... you cannot give a compliment and not sound sarcastic when you have disgust in the controls.
The interesting part are actually the components of the brain, where they incorporated like globes (they are called Forgotters) they clear out old memories (or what they deem as useless memories) along the shelves of the long term memories to make space for new ones (that's why I am unable to recall what I had for breakfast two days ago! my forgotters cleared them!). Memories that are thrown away will be sent into the memory dump where they will fade away sooner or later. Other than them, we also have our train of thoughts (literally a train) that runs everywhere in the brain, stopping at specific stops to collect stuff i guess :) There are also guards who keep a lookout and secure our deepest darkest fear storage (its just a big warehouse, locked with all our hidden fears inside). Of course! who will forget dream studio. It pretty much runs like a movie theatre or musical theatre where the cast are actually the globes. The director decides what will be on tonight and the globes will act it out... with a filter placed in front of the camera to make them take the form a humans. The emotions in the headquarters have to do something called 'dream duty' where they take turns to pull an all-nighter and watch the dreams, while the other emotions go to bed (yes! emotions need rest too!! maybe that's why a good night sleep will always make everything all right :)).
Not only Riley, even her parents, the boy she ran into, the dog and cat on the streets all have these little emotion creatures in their heads so it makes it a really cool film to peer into what each creature or being is actually thinking :)
Yes I will admit it, I cried a lot during the movie, it is kind of expected that the animations I watched are usually a tear-jerker kekex.
My favourite character would actually be sadness instead of joy (surprise surprise!). Joy has always been positive, but her trying to be happy and positive all the time really gets to me. Sadness on the other hand, though she is negative sometimes, but she adorable like blue body and that look makes up for her. In addition to her being a good listening ear and really smart since she read all the manuals in headquarters. Joy gets too over her head sometimes and that would be one thing which I really dislike about her.
The movie teaches us that well, emotions though may be unique on their own, but actually we all need a mix of them to get through the day. Its like we will only appreciate the good times if we have the bad times. We need to be sad for someone to cheer us up and make us happy:) It is okay to be angry and disgusted at the same time of that you might be scared of something because it is disgusting.
All right enough said, though my review is a little superficial, but I don't want to add in too many spoilers haha just for the people who hasn't caught it yet! please do! parents please bring your children! they'll learn how much precious having a family means to them!! haha and for people out there, sadness is actually female. lol not male! :)
I'll leave you guys with her :) Definitely one of the animation that tops the list... the other being Mr Peabody and Sherman :)
'Crying helps me slow down and obsess over the weight of life's problems'
'I'm too sad to walk, just give me a few hours' before she slithers to the floor and joy has to drag her around. The second time she felt like that, she she raised for foot and said to joy' i'm ready now' haha awww my little cutie pie :')

p.s Riley also had an imaginary friend called Bing Bong... which you have to watch the movie to feel his presence.
